YHA offers an extensive range of training courses, many resulting in a nationally recognised qualification, covering a variety of outdoor pursuits. Courses are provided for those wishing to lead and supervise groups in outdoor activities including climbing and walking, and we also offer training in subjects such as navigation and first aid.
A six-day course based at YHA Coniston Holly How from Sunday morning to Friday afternoon. The course is managed by the UKMTB and designed for hill walkers wishing to lead people in the mountains. Skills covered include navigation, campcraft, ropework, access and conservation, leadership and weather.

Fed up being a sheep, mystified by a compass or GPS, don’t know who Naismith was, or what a handrail is, then this is the course for you. Aimed at people who wish to learn to navigate confidently it is based on the syllabus for the National Navigation Award Scheme and can be certificated to bronze or silver award. Based in Dartmoor National Park this is the ideal location to practice these skills and have an enjoyable weekend. As in previous years we run a woman only and an adults and family course

You will be assessed in accordance with the MLTE criteria. Involving a written paper and practical work with a group of novice climbers. You must be registered with the MLTE and hold a valid first aid certificate. You will have attended an approved training course and then gained further experience which is recorded in your logbook.
